Re: Tasha’s link to the report from the Ontario Privacy Commissioner — nowhere in the report does it state that facial recognition technology is employed in TTC video surveillance. What is mentioned is research being done to use facial recognition technology in order to increase privacy (by hiding faces or bodies in the video footage and encrypting the original unaltered footage).

It is true, however, that facial recognition technology is readily available and can easily be incorporated into video surveillance. But, because these algorithms are publicly available, research is also being done on how to defeat this technology — see “CV dazzle makeup” : http://ahprojects.com/c/itp/thesis
