Michelle Robidoux – War Resisters Support Campaign
Traditionally, Canada has been considered a safe haven for conscientious objectors and during the Vietnam war, more than 50 000 draft dodgers came to Canada to avoid participating in what they considered to be an unjust war. Although the Canadian government was initially hesitant to allow deserters to become permanent residents, overwhelming public support of the anti-war movement changed their policies. The War Resisters Support Campaign is building on this same public support to prevent further deportations of Iraq war resisters, men and women who left their lives in the United States to avoid fighting in a war they consider to be unjust and illegal. Michelle Robidoux speaks about the situation of Iraq war resisters and the legal and political issues they face.
